Pinoy TV Shows

What I would like to include in this list are variety shows, gag shows, game shows, reality and talent search shows, documentaries, talk shows, and sitcoms.

1. Gag/ comedy shows

If there's one thing that TV must offer, it is laughter. When you turn on the tv, you expect to be entertained, to be informed and the least would be - to be reminded of your worries, of unsolved problems, of heartaches you can't escape.

In short, you least expect to feel bad about yourself, your situation.

Most of us watch tv for entertainment. We crave to be inspired, to be recharged.

Gag shows, parodies, and sketch comedies can wipe out those uncertainties. These kinds of shows provide the opportunity to take a break and let the idea flow just when we are ready to bounce back to reality.

a. Bubble Gang

At first, I dislike this show since Michael V and Ogie Alcasid were pirated from Tropang Trumpo.

Today, I miss the tandem of Michael V and Ogie. They were able to create characters that were really funny. The best parts of the show were the commercial spoofs, parodies of famous dramas and Michael V' s creative and humorous interpretations of popular songs.

I even dreamt of joining the show for internship and wished that I could interview the director of the show, Uro dela Cruz.

This show has successfully delivered laughter every Friday for almost two decades now. There may have been changes in the line up of artists but this show never fails to bring relaxation and laughter.

Faves on existing cast are Michael V, Antonio Aquitania, Boy 2 Quizon, Chariz Solomon, Valeen Montenegro, Sef Cadayona and Mikael Daez.

My favorite artists from this show were Amanda Page, Assunta de Rossi, Wendell Ramos, Rufa Mae Quinto, Sunshine Cruz, Aiko Melendez, Eric Fructuoso, Toni Gonzaga, Maureen Larrazabal, Ara Mina, Diana Zubiri, and Sam Pinto.

The OST of this show is so adorable.

Recently, the jokes were not appropriate for young audiences, so the time slot was moved. It precedes the late-night newscast.

b. Tropang Trumpo

Super love the Battle of the Brainless, Bahaw:Ang Kaning Lamig and their chicken song. I love Gelli de Belen, Carmina Villaroel, Smokey Manaloto, Earl Ignacio, Maoi Roca and the gwapings- Jomari Yllana, Eric Fructuoso and Mark Anthony Fernandez.

c.Lokomoko

This gag show was very entertaining. It was a pity that it suffered low ratings due to numerous times that the show was aired on hard to track time slots.

It had several revivals (Lokomoko High, Lokomoko U and more). This show made me appreciate the comedic abilities of Empoy Marquez, Alex Gonzaga, Tuesday Vargas, JC de Vera, Rainier Castillo, Valeen Montenegro, and Dianne Medina. Long Mejia was a big help in this show.

d. Banana Sundae

I am happy that this show endured changes in time slots from super late Saturday evening as Banana Split to afternoon time slot as Banana Split:Daily Serving then it was moved again until it stayed on a Sunday spot as Banana Sundae.

My favorite artists in this show are Angelica Panganiban, Pokwang, Pooh and Jason Gainza. I discovered through this show that Zanjoe Marudo and Cristine Reyes can do comedy skits.

I love the way Angelica impersonate Kris Aquino.

2. Sitcoms

I love situational comedies.

Its power to influence society was overlooked. The chance to educate society in light-hearted manner but with emphasis on daily trials of ordinary people was taken for granted. The chance to teach moral lesson especially to youngsters was tossed aside, perceived as too corny for millennials.

I always believed that people remember good things more if there is warmth in their hearts, and sitcoms can deliver that warmth with sincerity.

I am sad that prime time programming nowadays were occupied by news and soap operas. What is disheartening with this kind of tv offer was that news often centers  its reportage on accidents, violence and sensational but useless banter of brainless, selfish, boastful and corrupt politicians while soap operas tackle if not unrealistic battles of tired-from-work audience, it would  be exaggerated conflicts of mistresses slash dysfunctional families, with unattractive time slots and impractical running time.So much was wasted on tv's supposed capacity to mold better public opinion to induce relevant action.

Here is the list of sitcoms I missed the most.

a. Abangan ang Susunod na Kabanata

This Monday sitcom bravely played on important societal issues. I guess, this was one if the reasons why fake news did not prosper that time. TV acted as a gatekeeper with credible characters which exposed the government's follies. Those jokes were hurtful jabs that people laugh at but at the back of their minds were thought-provoking, hence, people observed more and were more calculated in taking action against government irregularities.

I was not only amused but was totally in awe on how the actors- Tessie Tomas, Noel Trinidad, Nova Villa, Freddie Webb, Roderick Paulate and Carmi Martin gave life to these well-written characters of Jose Javier Reyes. The show was directed by Johnny Manahan.

b. Over the Bakod

What I loved about this show was the clever play on differences of the rich and the poor and the role of karma in life. This show made a disgusting character likeable. Leo Martinez as Don Roberto successfully fleshed out a doting father role to Honey Grace and Barbie Doll, played by Gelli de Belen and Donita Rose respectively. The girls' love interests are poor boys, Mokong  (Janno Gibbs) and Bubuli  (Anjo Yllana) who lived over the fence.

I enjoyed watching Malou de Guzman as Lucring fight with Don Roberto, her old flame, to protect her sons Mokong and Bubuli.

Donna Cruz as Muning made this show funnier.

c. Beh! Bote Nga!

The love for genie in the bottle is the source of inspiration for this show.I was a Giselle Toengi fan that time because of her Gimik stint that's why I followed her in this show plus the Janno and Anjo tandem in a sitcom was already proven  entertaining. They played garbage men who found a dazzling bottle, however, the genie was inept in granting their three wishes.

This show also fulfilled my love for puns.I enjoyed how this show named the characters.Janno and Anjo's dream girls were Celine (Shermaine Santiago) and Dion (Aubrey Miles). The hecklers were Tom (Jake Roxas) and Jerry (KC Montero).

Anne Curtis appeared as the genie known as Genie Fer. The boys who were smitten by her were Peter (Richard Gutierrez) and Parker (Sherwin Ordonez). Ina Raymundo was Tina and Ana Roces was Maan.

Dick Israel as Mang Max and Tia Pusit as Aling Tweety were memorable in this show.

This show was totally hilarious when Allan K, Gladys Guevarra and Bella Flores joined the fun.

This show emphasized hard work and not relying on luck alone.

d. Bahay Mo Ba'to?

This sitcom headed by Tessie Tomas and Ronaldo Valdez was a refreshing take on sibling rivalry. I enjoyed watching Gladys Reyes, Sunshine Dizon and Keempee de Leon in absolutely different role they have played in the past.

Keempee's Harold was a breakthrough in acting out a fashionista gay role but in a formal and classy manner.

e. Home Along Da Riles

This was one of the best family-oriented sitcoms on Philippine television. Imagine, this show was able to present  the struggles of a single father with four children. Dolphy as Kevin was a minimum wage earner, an ordinary employee who has to juggle his role in the office as an errand man, and as a father to a girl and three boys. He has to deal with sweet and charming but nosy sister-in-law, Nova Villa.

I love the conflicts presented in each episode and the solutions were ideal but not impossible to achieve.I love how this show emphasized the importance of communication in relationships, humility, bayanihan, honesty, integrity and diligence at work.

I liked also how this show consistently reminds to take care of your health through the presence of Mang Tomas and Sunog baga gang.

There may be discussion on how this show moved in a patriarchal society but the awareness it has raised is a huge leap which is better than not having any show that acknowledge a concern that needs to be addressed.

f. Kool Ka Lang

This sitcom successfully gathered the most unexpected, the funniest and coolest gang in showbiz. Who would've thought that Bonel Balingit as Empoy, a popular basketball player, and Raymart Santiago as Jack can make Friday evenings fun for four years?

This was one of the sitcoms that I was caught off guard when it was cancelled. The chemistry of the actors - Joey Marquez, Long Mejia, Dagul, Benjie Paras, Jomari Yllana, Blakdyak, Rufa Mae Quinto, Alessandra de Rossi, Gloria Diaz, LJ Moreno, Maureen Larrazabal, Maui Taylor, Isko Salvador and Dennis Padilla was incredible. The way they throw their punchlines, off the record revelations, spoofs and more, this show was a hit that the cancellation decision was a surprise.

g. Lagot Ka, Isusumbong Kita

This sitcom replaced Kool Ka Lang, hence, it took a while to enjoy this. This show reminded me of Palibhasa Lalake since Richard Gomez joined Joey Marquez, Benjie Paras and Raymart Santiago.

This show was entertaining as it tackled family relationships, rivalry over old flame and struggles of closet gay played by Teri Onor.

Watching Pilita Corales play as Mamita was an extra treat.

h. Richard loves Lucy

This sitcom played on struggles of married life. Lucy doesn't act funny but she is so funny. Super love her. Her chemistry with Wilma Doesn't was charming that's why I followed both of them in Lucy's self titled talk show.

i. Palibhasa Lalake

This sitcom was offensive numerous times due to focus on machismo but I was too young then to digest that. All I know was, the characters played by Richard Gomez, Joey Marquez, Gloria Romero, Carmina Villaroel and Amy Perez were so funny.

I enjoyed watching the additional characters, too played by Anjo Yllana as Tikboy, Edu Manzano as Budoy, John Estrada as Johnny plus Jao Mapa and the gwapings - Jomari, Eric anf Mark Anthony.

This show was penned by Jose Javier Reyes and directed by Johnny Manahan.

j. Okay Ka Fairy Ko

I grew up watching this fantasy sitcom and enjoyed the moral lesson shared in each episode. I was amused on how the show survived especially when Faye's character underwent change of actresses from Alice Dixson to Tweetie de Leon and the last was Dawn Zulueta.

This sitcom introduced lots of memorable characters like Bale (Jinky Oda), Pipoy ( Larry Silva), Ina Magenta ( Charito Solis), Prinsipe K (Bayani Casimiro Jr. ), Yaya Engkantada (Debraliz), and Luka (Luz Valdez).

This sitcom was also successfully turned into a movie franchise.

k. Oki Doki Doc

This sitcom focused on showing care and love for animals. Aga Muhlach as Doc Aga is a veterinarian who takes care of his sister's two children, Camille Pratts and Alfonso Martinez. His love interest was Alex played by Agot Isidro who was the daughter of his landlord, Don Berto played by Babalu.

Paolo Contis, Claudine Barretto and Jimmy Santos are sitcom regulars who added fun in this show.

l. Pepito Manaloto

I love the way this show focuses on a particular virtue, the way it educates people on trendy things, the way it explains societal issues that were often overlooked or ignored. This show has that conscious effort of teaching audience how to behave and respond to difficult situations.

The simplicity of the characters are so relatable that you would feel that you live next to the Manaloto family.

This show  made me appreciate the comedic ability of Ronnie Henares, Arthur Solinap, Janna Dominguez, and Gwen Rosendahl.

Nova Villa will always be a favorite.
